We provide a number of opportunities for apprentices in licensed trades, which are registered with the relevant State training board:

  • Mechanical Plumbing
  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
  • Electrical
  • Sprinkler Fitting
  • Drafting

Off-the-job training is held at TAFE colleges, Registered Training Offices, and through specialist training providers with whom we partner.

On-the-job training is conducted on our various work sites and at A.G. Coombs facilities under the supervision and direction of expert and experienced staff.

Our Apprentice Supervisors look after the career interests of all apprentices, providing support, career direction and mentoring to individual apprentices.

Our reporting requirements ensure that off- and on-the-job training progress is monitored and supported. Our apprentices are encouraged to complete extra training in relevant areas.

We actively engage with partner educational facilities to continually track training progress and to help ensure that the educational curriculum is appropriate to workplace and apprentice needs.

In the workplace, our apprentices are mentored by our experienced tradespeople who are at the top of their respective trade.

The annual Allan Coombs Training Achievement Award for best overall A.G. Coombs Group apprentice in any field recognises educational and on-the-job performance and personal and community achievements and contribution.

Graduate Engineer Program

A.G. Coombs provides strong foundations for interesting and fulfilling engineering careers though a structured and challenging Graduate Engineer Program. Through this program graduates are given the chance to gain hands-on experience in their field, and receive guidance and mentoring from industry experts.

Along with challenging project related work, graduates are involved in an array of training and development opportunities. Training is carried out both in a team setting and on an individual customised basis, and includes formal training through external providers including AIRAH, construction induction training, essential safety training and the Veolia / Dalkia air conditioning Clinics.

A.G. Coombs is a provider of Whole-of-Life building services across the full range of technologies and the program features a rotation through the different operational areas of the Group including:

  • Estimating
  • Drafting / Building Information Modelling
  • Commissioning
  • Project Management
  • Advisory
  • Service

At the outset of the program each graduate engineer is allocated both a ‘Mentor’ and a ‘Buddy’. The mentor is a senior engineer who is responsible for supporting and guiding ‘on-the-job’ training and technical development. The buddy provides informal guidance to the graduate and is an experienced employee.

Reviews are carried out which provide a forum for feedback on their progress and future development.

At the completion of the program graduates have a good understanding of all aspects of engineering and technical functions within A.G. Coombs and the building services industry.

IBL (Industry Based Learning)

A.G. Coombs partners with selected education providers to offer IBL opportunities to engineering undergraduates. You are provided with the opportunity to work in a position relevant to a field of studies before you graduate, and to:

  • Clarify your career path.
  • Be mentored by industry professionals.

Work Experience

Work Experience is offered to a limited number of secondary school students with an interest in a career in building services, and students undertaking the VCAL Certificate or involved in a TAFE pre-apprenticeship course. Work experience is usually offered as a 2-week block or one day per week for eight weeks.

Our professional development programs support our philosophy of developing our people for the future.

Business Excellence

A.G. Coombs operates a Business Excellence Program for our employees. The Program consists of four development phases:

  • Introduction (level 1)
  • Development (level 2)
  • Advanced (level 3)
  • Executive (level 4)

To maximise the career potential of each individual, the program consists of a variety of accredited short courses, seminars and formal education, together with tailored work assignments and on-the-job training. The program also allows the participant to gain recognised formal qualifications.

The Business Excellence Program is available for key individuals who have displayed a high level of performance in their current role as well as having demonstrated their acceptance of greater responsibility, or who have a desire to progress to a more senior role.

Leading Edge

Our Leading Edge Program is designed to encourage the growth of our leaders by primarily focusing on individual development needs. In this program, leadership is viewed as the process of targeting and implementing purposeful growth and development in the following areas:
