Rethinking Fire Safety in a Net Zero World

June 1, 2023

Increased electrification is a significant pathway to achieving Net Zero targets for buildings. This can involve the installation of photovoltaics, heat pumps to replace natural gas boilers, electric vehicle charging stations, battery storage and induction cooking equipment. These technologies are relatively new variables in the built environment and can pose new fire safety challenges not considered and/or addressed to date by codes and standards.

In the 2023 Issue Two edition of Fire Australia magazine A.G. Coombs Advisory’s Marcus Royle explores this issue and provides insights into building electrification, performance based design / fire engineering aspects, mass timber construction and water and material waste.

Collaboration between fire protection services professionals, building owners, facility mangers and regulatory bodies will be essential to ensure that this transition is achieved safely.
