University of Queensland PACE Chiller Replacement
UQ PACE is Queensland’s leading facility for pharmaceutical research, education and commercialisation. These facilities aim to create a unique health and medical precinct, with a particular focus on pharmacy and pharmaceutical science.
Role of A.G. Coombs A.G. Coombs was engaged as the principal contractor for the chiller replacement of the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence at The University of Queensland (UQ).
Challenges
- With the requirement to ensure that two out of the three chillers always remained operational, additional planning was necessary to safely execute the crane lift while simultaneously maintaining critical cooling to the precinct.
- Limited locations available for positioning a crane.
Approach & Methodology
As the principal contractor, A.G. Coombs was responsible for all aspects of the project, including civil, structural and
remedial works. A specialised crane pad was required to facilitate the positioning of a 500 tonne crane, ensuring the smooth transition of multiple chillers to the rooftop plant area.
Careful planning was necessary to guarantee that the pharmaceutical facility maintained critical cooling throughout the project’s duration. A.G. Coombs provided an alternative staged approach after careful consideration, which allowed for the facility to continue operating.
A.G. Coombs and our client worked closely together to devise a solution that involved utilising two of the new chillers in a temporary location.
This approach enabled the removal of the existing equipment, followed by the installation and commissioning of the new chillers in their final location.
Key Outcomes
- Successfully met the client’s requirement of zero downtime on any of the air conditioning systems. Two chillers were online at any one time, 24/7.
- Alternative lifting and rigging option provided a safer solution for the client.
- Installation of Daikin chiller optimisation panel which ensures greater energy efficiency across all three chillers and hydronic equipment.
