Safety Alert issued for the safe use of flammable refrigerants

January 30, 2017

The extensive environmental damage caused by synthetic chemical refrigerants has given rise to the use of natural refrigerants, predominantly hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and ammonia. Many of these refrigerants are flammable, toxic or both and have the potential to cause serious injury or death as well as property damage.

WorkSafe Victoria has issued a Safety Alert concerning the safe use of flammable refrigerants setting out the relevant duties for occupiers of premises, marking and labelling requirements, location guidelines and suggested risk control measures.
