New Industry standard enables Digital Facility Management

July 27, 2021

Facility Managers rely on accurate information for planning and to keep assets running effectively. This includes asset maintenance and compliance records, financials, real-time performance, construction records and safety information. Typically this information is stored in many places, not consistently structured, hard to find and is continuously accumulated. This results in time spent finding, collating and recreating information.

In the April – June 2021 edition of Facility Perspectives magazine, TK Wang explains how the VBIS standard supports the ability to better access and operationalize this data and allows Facility Managers to make better use of information to achieve FM outcomes.

VBIS is an open standard, not a software application, and it standardises how assets and asset information are classified and provides a resilient method for information platforms and data sets to connect.

The key objectives of VBIS:

  • Provide an easy way for Facility Managers to maximise use of existing information sets to support capital and operational planning, performance benchmarking and contract management
  • Provide a practical pathway for BIM to FM
  • Easy to adopt across information applications already in use by Facility Managers

The VBIS development was supported by the Victorian Government through the Future Industries Fund Section Growth Program as an innovative development that supports the construction and ongoing management of built infrastructure.
