Meet Martin Whitney, Project Manager

July 20, 2020

We continue to introduce our people from around the A.G. Coombs Group. Meet Martin Whitney, Project Manager who started at A.G. Coombs 27 years ago straight out of high school!

We spent some time getting to know Marty and asked him some questions. Here’s what he had to say:

What were you doing before you started working at A.G. Coombs?
I had just finished year 12 at high school.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work at A.G. Coombs??
There are many rewarding parts of the role. The top three would have to be:

  1. Helping with the Apprenticeship Program and watching the next generation come through the system.
  2. Working in a good team environment where everyone is willing to help one another.
  3. Successfully completing complex projects with satisfied customers at the end.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Managing my time across multiple jobs and tasks.

What has been the most memorable or complex project you have been involved with?
Telstra Data Centre. I was the site manager at the Telstra Data Centre. The new data centre was a mission-critical facility and incorporated 2 x 1000m2 data halls and fully independent plant and power supply. It was the first fully coordinated BIM project and had a high focus on prefabrication all of which helped the project be successfully delivered on time and budget. There was a great team environment between all subcontractors and the Lendlease team who was the head contractor.

If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?
Cure Cancer.

What is something you are currently looking forward to?
Camping and surfing up the NSW South Coast, hopefully before Christmas.

If you could go back and give advice to yourself at 18-years-old, what would it be?
Don’t sweat the little things. Put yourself out of your comfort zone.
