A.G. Coombs is set to make an impact at the upcoming Autodesk University Design & Make Conference – AU 2025 in Nashville, 16-18 September.
John VanCuylenberg, Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Leader at
A.G. Coombs Group, has been invited to present on the company’s development of ‘Informed Design’ for building services.
This innovative approach pioneered by A.G. Coombs is poised to make a significant impact on the construction industry by moving beyond traditional siloed workflows and seamlessly connecting design, fabrication, and
long-term performance.
Informed Design & A.G. Coombs
John’s presentation at AU 2025 will delve into how A.G. Coombs is leveraging Autodesk products to implement Informed Design, with an initial focus on prefabricated frames.
“We’re focusing on more than just design; it’s about addressing engineering constraints, meeting quality assurance requirements for fabrication, and coordinating the entire supply chain to bring buildings to life,” John explains. “This informed, holistic approach not only streamlines current projects but also lays the groundwork for future practices, such as applying circular economy principles to enable the reuse of building components.”
Being invited to speak at Autodesk University is a significant recognition, highlighting A.G. Coombs as a leader in innovative technical solutions.
When asked about this unique opportunity, John highlights the power of “bridging the gap between design and manufacturing through technology.” He notes that while much of the virtual build process has traditionally focused on design, A.G. Coombs is demonstrating how Informed Design thinking can seamlessly integrate every stage of the project lifecycle – from concept to construction to ongoing performance.
John’s AU 2025 presentation abstract titled “Connecting Design and Manufacturing of Prefabricated Frames with Informed Design” succinctly captures A.G. Coombs’ vision and innovative application of Autodesk products:
- Informed Design is changing how we think about construction by connecting design, fabrication and performance to deliver smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable outcomes.
- Built on the principles of outcome-based BIM, it shifts the focus from drawings to results, ensuring what is designed can be accurately fabricated and effectively delivered.
- This class will explore how Autodesk tools enable early coordination and support modular construction, with a focus on prefabricated frames.
- Whether you are in design, engineering or delivery, you will learn how Informed Design reduces rework, improves buildability, enhances sustainability, and sets projects up for success.
- At A.G. Coombs, we are preparing to apply this approach within a Whole-of-Life framework, drawing on our downstream expertise to help close the loop between design and long-term performance. Join us to see how Informed Design can add value to your projects now and into the future.
