RMIT’s Swanston Academic Building has won the Engineering Excellence Award for Buildings and Structures at the 2014 Victoria Engineering Excellence Awards (VEEA 2014).

Established by Engineers Australia, the annual VEEA Awards recognise the contribution engineers make to community through their innovations, teamwork, ingenuity and creativity.
RMIT SAB features a wide range of sustainability initiatives including operable facade elements for natural ventilation and energy efficient electrical and mechanical systems, which contribute to its 5 Star Green Star Education Rating for environmentally sustainable design. The Engineering Excellence Award for Buildings and Structures is awarded to those who demonstrate excellence in the engineering and development of a building or structure completed within the last two years.
Designed by Lyons Architects with building services consultants Aecom, the stunning building was constructed by Brookfield Multiplex. A.G. Coombs Projects delivered air conditioning and mechanical services throughout the 11 storey RMIT SAB building. The project included the detailed design, installation and commissioning of a new air conditioning system and building management and controls system (BMCS), with the latter connected to energy and water meters allowing for real-time monitoring of water, electricity and gas consumption. These new systems have been critical in helping to achieve the building’s environmental targets.
A.G. Coombs congratulates RMIT and the design and construction team on this achievement.
