Role of Independent Commissioning Agents – Developments in Green Star ICA
Buildings and construction constitute almost 40 per cent of all carbon emissions in the world (World Green Building Council). But highly efficient buildings combined with onsite renewables offer a clear pathway towards net zero, as evidenced by the Climate Bonds Initiative’s recent approval of the Green Star rating tools as compliant with green bonds certification.
The Independent Commissioning Agent (ICA) now has greater responsibility to ensure these requirements are captured throughout the project life-cycle. Understanding the importance of this, Green Star has provided greater focus on the critical role of ICA on par with other world-leading standards such as BREEAM (UK) and LEED (US).
Appointing an ICA is more than just claiming the Green Star credits under “Verification and Handover”. The ICA actively participates and provides inputs for everything from electrification and lighting control strategies, through to demand management, data analytics and advanced tuning.
The latest Green Star Building v1 mandates a “soft landings approach” for larger projects. Within this, the ICA has an important role in conjunction with the FM and other stakeholders to comprehensively hand over the building through an extended aftercare methodology.
In this presentation Rakesh and David will take the audience through the evolving role of the ICA, the latest Green Star ICA process, and KPIs and expected outcomes with reference to current and recent projects.
