A.G. Coombs – Adding innovation and value to the new Melton Hospital project

August 5, 2025

With continuing success in the delivery of mechanical services of major healthcare infrastructure – including the Victorian Heart Hospital and Frankston Hospital Redevelopment – A.G. Coombs is once again proud to be part of a consortium that has been awarded the contract for another key hospital in Victoria.

Ongoing commitment to growing Victoria’s health infrastructure

Exemplar Health, a consortium comprising Capella Capital, Lendlease, Honeywell and Compass Group, was awarded the contract to deliver Melbourne’s state-of-the-art hospital – the New Melton Hospital.
A.G. Coombs are an exclusive trade partner for this consortium for the delivery of mechanical services.

“Having worked closely with Lendlease on several heath infrastructure projects, a strong and trusted partnership has been formed between our two organisations,” commented Mark Mitchell, Executive General Manager & Director at A.G. Coombs.

“The close working relationship results in efficient project delivery and high-quality outcomes, with Lendlease, A.G. Coombs and other project stakeholders functioning as one cohesive unit,” he added.

As critical infrastructure to help meet the needs of Melbourne’s growing west, Melton Hospital represents another investment by the Victorian Government into healthcare infrastructure.

A public private partnership (PPP) project, the more than $900M Melton Hospital is due for completion in 2029. It will support the growing and diverse communities of Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne, helping to ensure that the people of Melbourne’s west get the care they need, close to home.

It will also play a role in reducing emissions and enabling Victoria’s journey to net zero by operating as the state’s first healthcare facility to exclusively use electricity as its energy source.

Being overseen by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA), the all-electric sustainability-driven, climate-adaptive and energy efficient public hospital located at Ferris Road, Cobblebank will deliver:

  • a 24-hour emergency department
  • an intensive care unit
  • at least 274 beds
  • maternity and neonatal services
  • mental health services
  • radiology services
  • ambulatory care
  • a new education and training hub for medical workers in Melbourne’s west.

Adding greater value through prefabrication

As the mechanical services trade partner, A.G. Coombs has been actively collaborating with the Arup design team over the past few months, progressing through Design Stage 1.

We are now mobilised to complete Design Stage 2, transitioning into the development of construction drawings and coordination efforts.

Our final design development will fully integrate our prefabrication capabilities to modularise the installation of services. The design will prioritise spatial and installation efficiencies, enabling off-site parallel construction to optimise programme durations by streamlining on-site activities.

Additionally, we are engaging with other trades to support coordination and construction sequencing, working collaboratively with the builder and trade partners to ensure a cohesive and efficient delivery.

While services modules are standardised as much as possible for components, connectivity, quality and consistency, each prefabricated module is bespoke – customised according to service needs in individual spaces across what will be a large, spread-out campus-style complex rather than a single multi-storey building.

The layout of the future hospital at Melton brings with it a unique set of logistics, planning and sequencing challenges that the prefabrication elements will help to minimise as further planning continues and construction progresses.

“Working with Lendlease and other trades, the A.G. Coombs teams are building on their previous experience using prefabricated modules to explore greater benefits to the project,” said Imran Khan, A.G. Coombs Major Projects Business Victoria Manager.
