Sustainability and energy efficiency are key focuses of building regulation. It seems that more thought is put into reducing the operational impacts of a building than into the protection of its occupants. The Grenfell Tower disaster showed that not all sustainable materials are fire safe, nor do designers necessarily think about what happens with the structure in the event of a blaze.
So, can fire protection ever be sustainable? Can sustainable features ever be fire safe?
