Bryon Price Delivers Seminars at ARBS Challenging Industry to Become More Proactive in Building Tuning and Energy Efficient Maintenance

13th Apr 2010

This morning Bryon Price (Strategic Development Director, A.G. Coombs Group) challenged ARBS attendees to engage service providers more effectively to deliver increased energy savings. Speaking on a panel of industry experts focusing on the “Low Hanging Fruit for Energy Savings”, Price indicated that both property managers and building service providers needed to more proactively share and document building performance information.

Price stated, “In circumstances where A.G. Coombs is specifically asked to devise an energy efficient maintenance strategy for a building, the outcome is far more superior for the client than simply delivering a standard maintenance contract.  While mandatory disclosure requirements and other industry drivers will increase the demand for building tuning services, there are still insufficient people in Australia with the required skills to effectively tune a building.  It isn’t rocket science, but understanding the way systems consume energy can be relatively complex.”

While Price focused on Low Hanging Fruit from the service provider’s perspective, his fellow panellist Sean Condon (Environment Manager from Investa Property Group’s Asset Services division) provided the building owner’s perspective.  Dr John Ward (Senior Scientist with CSIRO) covered current research in carbon abatement strategies and energy saving measures.

All panellists agreed that, when there are limited funds available for energy efficiency initiatives, money is generally best spent initially on gauging the building’s current level of performance which may include engaging a building efficiency adviser and installing metering systems.  Sean Condon indicated that “an experienced adviser often has the capacity to quickly identify efficiency opportunities that just aren’t obvious to others”.

Later in the afternoon, Bryon Price delivered another seminar on energy efficiency entitled “Building Tune Ups for Ongoing Energy Savings.”  This presentation covered:

·          The New Reality in building tuning

·          Current practices and problems

·          A detailed case study in building tuning, and

·          The integrated approach required for effective building tuning.

Price argued that “building tuning and energy efficiency maintenance really need to go hand in hand.  It’s not just about reaching the required energy rating; it’s also about retaining that energy efficiency level over time”.
