Walker Fire Protection Joins Industry Debate on Alternative Solutions
29th Oct 2009
Walker Fire Protection Pty Ltd was invited by Fire Australia to contribute to this year’s interactive conference “The Great Debate”.
The two-day conference program, which ended today, comprised a series of four topical debates including:
- “Prepare, Stay and Defend or Go” versus Enforced Evacuation
- Coronial Enquiries – What is their Goal?
- Prescriptive Solutions (intervention) versus Alternative Solutions (innovation)
- Passive Protection versus Active Protection
Geoff Flower (Engineering Services Manager from Walker Fire Protection) argued the case for prescriptive solutions in the third debate, presenting a paper entitled “Alternative Solutions from Hell! A Contractor’s Perspective”.
While the ability to be flexible in building design often makes Alternative Solutions very appealing and cost effective, experience shows that there are frequently considerable faux pas limiting the potential benefits of Alternative Solutions. The inclusion of professional Fire Engineering services early in the process is critical to avoid common problems from incorrect installations through to compliance management problems.
