Opening of Australia's Largest and Most Prestigious Office Building

ANZ's new global headquarters at Melbourne Docklands was officially opened today by the Premier of Victoria, John Brumby. A.G. Coombs is pleased to be involved in the construction and ongoing operational management and maintenance of this extraordinary facility.

The building itself (located at 833 Collins Street) will house 6,500 ANZ staff and is the largest single-tenanted commercial building in the Southern Hemisphere with a total of 10 office floors.  Designed to be the greenest commercial office space in Australia, it is being constructed to achieve a 6-star ‘As Built’ rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. 

The building’s size, technical complexity, requirement for superior environmental performance and high standard of occupant amenity make it a very special facility.   

At the building’s opening, Mr Brumby commended the development saying, “By using solar and wind energy, recycling much of its water use, harvesting rainwater and installing an air-conditioning system that uses cool water from the Yarra to reduce demand on the cooling towers, ANZ has set a new standard in environmental design. The Docklands is one of the largest urban renewal projects in the world and I congratulate ANZ and their construction, development and design partners …. for delivering a great workplace for the bank’s employees and for showing confidence in the Victorian economy.”   

During construction, A.G. Coombs Pty Ltd (Projects) provided detailed design, installation and commissioning for the extensive mechanical air conditioning and ventilation systems.  The company is also responsible for the building’s automation and controls systems and the tri-generation system.   

A.G. Coombs Advisory Pty Ltd acted as the critical Green Star Independent Commissioning Agent, assuring the commissioning of all environmentally related building systems and features in order to achieve the best practice 6 Star Green Star rating.   

It is a major undertaking and a fundamental requirement for such a building to transition from construction through the warranty period into a fully operational facility. To ensure success, Integrated Technical Management Pty Ltd (a member of the A.G. Coombs Group) was selected to provide specialist technical multi system maintenance and operational services for the initial building tuning period and for the ongoing operation of the building. 

The aim is to continually deliver superior tenant amenity and world class environmental performance in Australia’s largest new office building.
