Stannus Presents Best Practice Building Tuning at ARBS With a Clear Message – “If your building isn’t performing, it isn’t green”

This morning at ARBS Warwick Stannus, Group Engineering Manager from the A.G. Coombs Group, presented a seminar entitled, “Seasonal HVAC Commissioning – Strategies for Year Round Efficiency.”
Stannus stressed the importance of scoping building tuning projects upfront. He stated, “5 and 6 Star Green Star projects can become very complex and difficult to commission and it is therefore imperative to determine upfront what sustainability initiatives will be implemented. Whether it involves heat recovery, chilled beams or high efficiency chiller plants, you need to focus on what can realistically be achieved upfront at the design stage”. Speaking from years of experience on Green Star and NABERS projects, Stannus emphasised that what may appear to work in theory, does not always work in practice. “Over complexity can kill long term efficiency”.
Stannus also warned, that while industry had made some impressive advancements in innovations, these needed to be accompanied with a renewed focus on the fundamentals of good engineering practice in design, installation and commissioning. While there have been impressive enhancements in technology, many of the features of this technology have not been exploited well.

As the industry moves away from a focus on pure practical completion, building owners are increasingly expecting warranted outcomes, a more holistic approach and a measurable NABERS rating. Building tuning requires the right tools, right resources, right skills and time.
