$1b Royal Children's Hospital Reaches Construction Milestone
16th Nov 2009
Today the last major concrete was poured to complete the structure of the new $1 billion Royal Children's Hospital (RCH).
The achievement of this first significant milestone was recognised by the Premier John Brumby who toured the site of the facility today. Mr Brumby said, “This brand new, state-of-the-art hospital will provide top-class healthcare to some of Victoria’s sickest children…It’s great to see the building taking shape with construction both on time and on budget”.
A.G. Coombs played an important part in providing air conditioning for the old hospital when it was first built in Parkville back in 1957. History has now come full circle with A.G. Coombs again engaged in the construction of the new state of the art hospital, which is tracking well to be completed in December 2011.
The new hospital is environmentally friendly, aiming to be Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star hospital. An overall 45% reduction in attributable greenhouse gas emissions will be achieved through measures such as energy efficient cooling, heating and lighting system, gas-fired cogeneration plant, solar panels and a bio-mass boiler.
The project’s air conditioning and mechanical services workforce of engineers and site personnel is likely to peak at over 180 people, all committed to ensuring that the new facility is yet again a significant improvement in “providing the very best possible buildings and facilities for the care and treatment of sick children”.
